What is natural astaxanthin?
Natural Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid produced by freshwater algae Haematococcus pluvialis when it is exposed to stressful conditions, acting as a shield and protects the algae from environmental pressures. Protected by Astaxanthin, green algae survive for up to 40 years without nutrients and under high-stress conditions.
Astaxanthin is also the red pigment that gives many animals that feed on algae, such as krill, shrimp, salmon and flamingos their beautiful pink/ red colour.
What is the difference between astaxanthin from H. Pluvialis versus krill, shrimp, and salmon?
The micro-algae H. Pluvialis is far more concentrated and potent, measuring 40,000ppm. Krill provides 120ppm, shrimp 1200ppm, and salmon 40ppm.
The astaxanthin molecule made by our special micro-algae is also folded differently for far more powerful results, conferring superior bioactivity than the less active forms. Almost all human studies have been carried out using the micro-algae source because of its superior activity.
What health benefits do astaxanthin offer?
Over 500 scientific studies demonstrate astaxanthin’s health benefits in supporting our eye health, heart health, immune support, joint health, skin health and sports performance and recovery. As the most powerful antioxidant discovered (6000x stronger than Vitamin C, 800x stronger than CoQ10), astaxanthin offers a wide range of benefits for human health. Supreme Health synergises Astaxanthin with other condition-effective ingredients to provide support for targeted conditions. We believe that astaxanthin benefits are maximised with the right mix of ingredients that are at the right doses.
What is the recommended daily dose?
The recommended daily dose of varies depending on what condition you use it for:
- For antioxidant coverage, we suggest 4-8mg
- For cholesterol and cardiac support, we suggest 12mg
- For brain and central nervous health, we suggest 12mg
- For recovery from heavy exercise and sports, we suggest 8-12mg
- For protection from sunlight's aging effects, we suggest 4mg
- For joint health and mobility support, we suggest 8-12mg
If I want to support my heart and brain, do I take two daily 12mg astaxanthin doses or will one suffice?
You need a single 12 mg dose to support cardiac and brain health, which will also help with antioxidant coverage and skin protection.
When is the best time to take astaxanthin?
Take your astaxanthin with meals/ with dietary fat (eg: cheese, butter, nuts, seeds, avocado, whole eggs or dark chocolate) to ensure optimal absorption, so that your digestive enzymes can help with uptake.
Is it risky to take higher doses of astaxanthin?
Our recommended doses are based on research and clinical studies and are proven to be safe and effective. We recommend you stick to the doses we suggest, even though numerous studies have tested using larger doses and identified no harmful side effects. Pharmaceutical giant Hoffman La Roche has conducted extensive toxicology studies and found astaxanthin very safe.
Can children take astaxanthin?
We don’t recommend giving astaxanthin - or any other supplements - to children under the age of 10 without a recommendation from their doctor.
Can I use astaxanthin when pregnant or lactating?
Animal research studies have proved it causes no harm to pregnant rabbits and it's considered extremely safe, but we do not recommend taking astaxanthin during pregnancy or lactation.
Is it safe to take supplements with my prescription medications?
Yes, it is safe to take AstaSupreme with other medication, however, we suggest that you always check with your physician before starting any new supplement.
Can I take astaxanthin with Warfarin?
Astaxanthin does not contain vitamin K and therefore does not compete with warfarin to inhibit the vitamin K dependent clotting factors. See our blog article for more information.
Are there any side effects?
There are no reported side effects and it has been awarded a GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) classification by the US FDA. At very high doses (40-50mg/day) you might encounter slightly pink-red hued skin as levels of the supplement build up and redistribute.
How fast will I notice a difference?
It depends on the individual. Some will notice a difference in a day, others may take several days or a week.
Do your products contain gluten?
There is no gluten added to any of our products. However, we do not test for the presence of gluten and cannot guarantee that the products are free from trace amounts of gluten that could come about through the manufacturing process.
